Neuromuscular Dentistry and BioTens ®

Neuromuscular Dentistry involves the diagnosis and treatment of problems associated with the jaw, the muscles of the jaw, and the occlusion. Sophisticated instruments are used to find the position of the jaw where the teeth, muscles and joints will operate in harmony.

Dr. Steinberg uses BioTens® technology to diagnose Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorder and to record neuromuscular occlusion. Neuromuscular activity is measured by recording the amount of electrical activity in the muscles of the jaw. The BioTens Computerized Mandibular Scanning Unit utilizes a magnet placed in front of the lower front teeth and a sensor array to measure the jaw position in three dimensions.

Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorder

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, or TMD as it is commonly called, is a serious neuromuscular disorder associated with the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ). Symptoms of Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD) include headaches, jaw pain, problems chewing, and clicking or popping in the jaw. Many people suffer from one or more of these symptoms, and unfortunately in many cases these symptoms are either misdiagnosed or dismissed as having no physiological cause.

Neuromuscular Occlusion

Dental occlusion refers to the coming together of the upper and lower teeth. Neuromuscular Occlusion occurs when the dental occlusion is synchronized (coordinated) with healthy relaxed masticatory (chewing) muscles. The concept of neuromuscular occlusion has applications in the treatment of dental patients as well as in the treatment of patients suffering from Temporomandibular Joint Disorder. BioTens neuromuscular technology is a valuable aid used to achieve proper neuromuscular occlusion.
