Keys to Avoiding Dental Implant Failure
Question submitted by Kevin
I have short listed two dentists for my dental implant on an upper tooth, but I have one concern about each of them. One of them wants to do a CT scan, which I am not completely convinced is completely necessary. Over the years, I have had many x-rays and I worry about that. However, the second one uses an implant from a company called Southern Venturi. These don’t seem to be used very much and I worry if I need a replacement part I won’t be able to find them. Which do you think I should compromise on?
Kevin
Dear Kevin,
I’m glad you wrote. As for the CT scan. I think that is a necessary precaution. Dental implants are a 3-dimensional procedure. In order to make sure they are properly placed it is best that you have 3-dimensional x-rays of the area where they will be placed. You don’t want the surgeon or other dental provider placing the implants to accidentally hit a nerve.
Plus, your upper teeth are very close to your nasal cavity. You don’t want a dentist perforating your nasal cavity. Some dentists try to get around this risk by using short implants, but that has other risks. They do not hold up long-term.
On the type of dental implant, finding replacement parts are not nearly as important as the quality control of the manufacturer. I can’t tell you anything about that particular brand. Most of the top implant dentists tend to use other brands, which are made to very exacting standards.
The top brands are:
- Straumann
- Nobel Biocare
- 3i
- BioHorizons
- Zimmer
- Astrotech
Dental implants have the highest number of malpractice suits. When done incorrectly, there are serious consequences. Make sure the dentist you choose has plenty of post-doctoral training in placing dental implants. You do not want to end up as a dental implant horror story. It will also help you to make sure the dentist is as skilled at creating natural looking dental crowns. This way you can be sure it will blend in with your natural teeth.
