What Are The Best Materials for Dental Implants
Questions Submitted by: Calvin
I’m about to remove ten teeth in order to get a smile makeover. The dentist will replace them with dental implants. Will I be better off getting zirconia implants and will I want implant crowns that are also zirconia or will I want a more traditional porcelain for the crowns? Is there a brand of implant fixture I should use?

Dear Calvin,
Before I get to your questions, I have some of my own. You mentioned that you are having your teeth removed in order to get a smile makeover. Was something wrong with your teeth that they need to be removed? If not, then I recommend you get away from this dentist as quickly as possible. What he or she is suggesting is a major over treatment with so many serious risks for you that I am floored he’d even suggest it.
Traditionally, when someone gets a smile makeover, that is done with porcelain veneers. These hardly remove any tooth structure. Sometimes dentists, who don’t know how to create smile makeovers with veneers will suggest something they are familiar with, such as porcelain crowns. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a dentist telling a patient to remove their teeth and put new teeth in.
Let’s assume, for some insane reason, that your teeth are such a mess that they can’t be repaired and your only course of action left was to remove and replace them. The first thing you will want to do is find a dentist with post-doctoral training in placing dental implants. This is an advanced procedure which can cause serious problems when it is not done correctly. They would pick the right implant fixture for your situation. Even then, I wouldn’t think you’d need ten. In most cases when you are replacing an entire arch, you would only need between four to six implants and then anchor a set of dentures to them. I really feel like your dentist is on a money grab here, with complete disregard for your long term health.
